SA Health supporting women’s safety

In Port Pirie both government and non-government services work together to provide support for victim survivors and their families.

Yorke and Northern Local Health Network Clinical Senior Social Worker (Vulnerable Consumers), Erin Martin said that the Yorke and Northern Local Health Network works closely with Uniting Country SA, 1800 Respect and the Women’s Safety Services SA to connect those affected by domestic and family violence with confidential and caring support.

Ms Martin suggested that a great first point of contact for those in Port Pirie is The Haven, which offers free and confidential support to women who may be experiencing domestic and family violence.

An initiative of the Women’s Information Service, Havens have been established in locations around South Australia and are organised by different service providers depending on the site; with the Port Pirie service being guided by UCSA as the peak body in the region to help women experiencing domestic violence as well as those looking to make connections in the community.

Haven Partner Joanne Pisani said that the service was a very safe environment for women to be together, for those who might be socially isolated, and those who might be going through a tough time at home.

“This is a place where they can come and we all work to support each other; it’s a kind, non judgemental, caring group.

“I make sure everyone has a coffee and some women will say, no one’s ever really made me a coffee; we just really nurture these women while they are here and we provide referrals to other services.”

One of the main functions of the Haven is to provide information and assistance to access services that can help people in different situations.

“We don’t offer a crisis service but it is a soft landing here for women to get support and connect to services.”

The Haven is open between 10am and 2pm, Monday to Friday, and is located on the corner of Symonds Street and Anzac Road, Risdon Park.

The Haven is contactable for a confidential chat on 0499 420 923.

If preferred, people can also speak to their GP or a health professional.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples can also contact Tarpari Wellbeing Centre if they feel more comfortable speaking with somebody from the local community.

Tarpari’s clinical services are provided by nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers and no appointment is needed with the service open Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm at 47 Alexander Street Port Pirie.

Ms Martin said that help is available to listen and link people with the right support.

“Domestic and family violence is an issue for the whole community.

“The most important thing to know is there are people on hand to help.

“Assistance is confidential and there’s no judgement.”

If you or someone you know needs help or support, please contact the Yorke and Mid North Domestic Violence Service, Uniting Country SA, email unitingcountry@ucsa.org.au or phone Port Pirie: 8633 8600 or 0428 326 540 or 1300 067 777.

In emergencies, please dial 000.
