Vouchers directly boost visitation

THE hospitality and tourism sector in the Whyalla region is seeing a welcome boost this summer, thanks to the Coast is Calling Travel Voucher and Dining Cashback programs from the South Australian Government.

The initiatives are designed to stimulate coastal economies that have been impacted by the algal bloom this year.

Kelly Tape is the Regional Tourism Manager for Regional Development Australia Eyre Peninsula, and said both programs had provided vital support to businesses in Arno Bay, Cowell and Whyalla.

“The Coast is Calling Travel Vouchers have directly driven visitation and overnight stays, while the Dining Cashback program has encouraged residents and visitors to dine out locally and support South Australian seafood retailers, resulting in increased spend at participating venues,” Ms Tape said.

To date, 38 Eyre Peninsula businesses have registered for the Dining Cashback program, including restaurants, cafés, hotels, pubs, clubs, kiosks, surf lifesaving clubs, sporting clubs, takeaway outlets and seafood retailers.

Meanwhile, 33 local businesses joined Round 1 of the Coast is Calling Travel Voucher program, such as Cowell Foreshore Caravan Park, Sundowner Cabin and Tourist Park, Whyalla Playford Apartments and Point Lowly Cottages.

“Participating businesses have reported stronger booking activity, more walk-ins and higher mid-week trade linked to voucher redemptions and cashback claims,” Ms Tape added.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to buy some seafood for Christmas or just for sharing with family and friends during summer.”
